Client’s situation & inspiration

The key problem with the terrace was the lack of any harmonious flow through the kitchen, living and dining room and the lack of space and light as a result. Our clients were also having issues with their plumbing and electrical so they decided it was time to do a complete renovation on their terrace.

Brief

Harnessing natural sunlight, rethinking the floor plan and using every inch of available space were at the top of the agenda for this terrace house renovation in Sydney.

Their brief for the design was sophisticated family living with a series of multi-functional spaces and a fluid connection between inside and outside.

Challenges

  • Strata limitations
  • Tight access

Solution

When space is at a premium, it pays to make your rooms work twice as hard. Combining the laundry and bathroom made sense in so many ways – both rooms require plumbing, both are wet areas and it saved so much space!

We also improved the flow by creating an open plan living, dining, kitchen space at the rear, which opens up via stackable bifold doors to the private courtyard. Having the back of the house opening up to the rear courtyard or garden is one of the best ways to maximise natural light. The transformation delivered exactly what our client’s desired: streamlined spaces, open-plan layout, a light filled living room/kitchen and a fluid indoor-outdoor connection.

The finishes are sophisticated with a light and neutral colour palette that helps bounce sunlight nicely around the home.

Key features

  • Hand made feature tiles
  • Hand made staircase
  • New open plan layout
